The 10 Best Comedy Movies
Any list of the best comedy movies is subjective. Senses of humor vary, and what’s funny to one guy is the grossest thing one girl has ever seen. So, accepting the risk that we will be hate-bombed for posting this list that excludes your favorite, here are our top 10 comedy movie picks:
10. A Christmas Story
It may be a family movie, but it’s also a top comedy. How can you not love a film featuring a giant women’s leg lamp and a kid who freezes his tongue to a pole? Family film or not, it’s packed with laughs for all ages.
9. Wedding Crashers
It debuted to big numbers, and crashed the top 10 list at the same time. No matter the year, weddings never change, and the reasons for crashing them don’t either. Even better, this movie is a brilliant combination of modern romantic comedy and classic screwball comedy. What more could you want?
8. Office Space
If you’ve ever worked in an office, then you get Office Space. If you’ve ever had a case of the Mondays, then you get Office Space. If you’ve ever wondered how far they could push you before you burned the whole place down? This is the movie for you. And you don’t even need to love a stapler or a hate the required reports to agree that this movie belongs in the top 10.
7. There’s Something About Mary
Yes, it was a true gross-out film (hair gel anyone?), but it’s also a classic romantic comedy that is beloved by men and women alike. Just when you think it can’t get any wackier, it does. This just may be Ben Stiller at his best.
6. When Harry Met Sally
In case you’re wondering what we mean by "romantic comedy," this is it. This movie secured Meg Ryan’s spot as the romantic comedy queen. It also features Billy Crystal in one of his best roles ever. The jokes are laugh-out-loud funny, the sentiment is sweet, and no man will ever again announce that he can always tell when a woman is faking it.
5. Airplane!
Like most great spoofs, Airplane mocks the recent films of its time. Most of us haven’t seen the movies it targets, but we can still enjoy the satire at the heart of this fantastically funny film. From the older white women who speaks jive to the endearingly blundering Leslie Neilsen, this movie guarantees it’s arrival on most lists of the best comedy movies.
4. Modern Times
Any list of comedies has to include at least one from Charlie Chaplin. Modern Times features his most famous role: the Little Tramp. This is technically a silent film, but is also an early "talkie." He was a master of the slapstick style originated by Vaudeville. You’ll also recognize several sequences that inspired later movies and TV shows. No matter what you’re watching, it probably couldn’t have happened without Chaplin.
3. Monty Python and the Search for the Holy Grail
Monty Python and this movie are one of the things that probably wouldn’t have happened without Chaplin. From the moment the opening credits roll, this movie keeps you guessing (unless, like most people, you’ve already seen it 15 times.) We can’t think of one other that has spawned more quotables, inspired a Broadway show, and improved sales of coconut shells quite as much.
2. Some Like It Hot
Did you know Marilyn Monroe could be funny? It’s true! She was more than a blonde bombshell; she was also a romantic comedy star. This film is a classic screwball comedy about two men masquerading as women, and the woman they try to woo. Shenanigans ensue. It was risky then, and it’s still a little risky, but also endearing and funny.
1. Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
If you want to laugh until your face hurts, tears are streaming from your eyes, and your stomach is so sore you can hardly sit up, this is the movie for you. We know, the pain sounds difficult, but it’s so worth it. This is quite simply the funniest movie we have ever seen, and also a finely pointed satire on the Cold War, much of which still applies today.
You may not agree that these are the best comedies of all time, but everyone will probably agree that they’re funny. We don’t think we made any controversial picks, but there’s always that one person out there with a different kind of funny bone. Just in case we missed your picks, here are few unranked bonus movies:
- Spaceballs
- Groundhog Day
- Hot Shots
- Saving Grace
- Idiocracy
- The Philadelphia Story
- Blues Brothers
- Ghostbusters
- Elf
- National Lampoon’s Vacation
Are you laughing yet?
